Huron Valley PACE Welcomes State Senator Rosemary Bayer, 13th District, to its Ypsilanti Day Center

Ypsilanti, MI, Sept. 2x, 2023 – In celebration of National PACE Month in September, Huron Valley PACE (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly) welcomed Michigan State Senator Rosemary Bayer of the 13th District for a visit and tour of its Day Center in Ypsilanti. The Huron Valley PACE service area includes Washtenaw and Monroe counties, as well as parts of Oakland, Wayne, and Livingston counties. Senator Bayer represents many of the same communities served by Huron Valley PACE.

A program of Brio Living Services, Huron Valley PACE serves the psycho-social, medical, and supportive needs of low-income, nursing home-eligible adults, aged 55 and up. It currently serves 293 older adults at its Day Center in Ypsilanti who speak twelve different first languages.

This was Senator Bayer’s first visit to Huron Valley PACE, though not her first visit to a PACE site. She met with many Huron Valley PACE participants and team members as part of her visit, including Huron Valley PACE medical director, Marjorie Almeda, DO.

Dr. Almeda explained that Huron Valley PACE serves older adults with “complicated health issues, part of the challenge of getting older. Because PACE participants are able to live independently in their own homes, thanks to PACE services, people get better faster. PACE does more than any clinic and far more than any insurance provider. It offers the most holistic way of taking care of people. I’m so proud of my team.”

“Huron Valley PACE is so impressive,” said Senator Bayer who worked as a nursing assistant at a nursing home while a college student. “It’s great to know these options are available that extend life for older adults, reduce costs, and make everyone happier. I appreciate all that you are doing.”

One Huron Valley PACE participant who visited with Senator Bayer said, “We’re a big family at PACE. Everyone knows each other, and we get a lot of support from each other. If you’re an older adult with medical needs and you live alone, PACE is for you.”

Said Senator Bayer, “I came to visit today because I like to support places that help people. We want to keep PACE going and have more places like it.”

Brio Living Services is one of Michigan’s leading providers of PACE services with five sites statewide, serving approximately 1,200 older adults annually across 15 Michigan counties.

PACE’s interdisciplinary team of professionals provides participants with a “one-stop” shop model for all their healthcare needs, including comprehensive medical, occupational and physical therapy, pharmacy needs, nutrition and meals, health education, social and recreational activities, behavioral health, home care, and door-to-door transportation. Most participants are dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid and pay no additional fees for PACE services.
